The reward for this, is a lovely walk along a forested high ridge trail. I drop down and leave the forest and hit the reroute that caused me so much grief last year as I feel the trail is poorly marked and both the paper maps and the Avenza digital maps have the original route that was closed many years ago Maps and Signage The Friends of the Heysen Trail publish two excellent guidebooks which contain maps and highlights for the entire trail. These are available from most good outdoor shops for $30 each which is money well spent 23 kms out and back along the Heysen Trail. You can suit yourself about the distance, by turning back at any time. The Trails SA maps refer to the Mawson as an off road trail. I can't see how they work that out - it's almost all on roads of some kind. They are mostly secondary dirt and made gravel roads, unmade vehicle tracks with a few sections of singletrack, and some excursions across private land This site was founded as a hobby by me, Darren Edwards, in 2015 to further the development of Australian trails and to increase the awareness of hiking as a major health benefit. The reality however is that the turn off is Wicks rd with Old Coach rd.

This is an especially great tool if you have accessibility needs, are visiting with people of varying ages or fitness levels or are pushing a pram and want to view a trail before leaving home This of course is not usual for bush walks let alone the Heysen trail, as previous entries quite clearly show. Our leisurely walk was about to be interrupted by the biggest descent of the Heysen walk so far. Wise word : Be wary of using Google maps. You will be led astray in this area.
